Yes, I know, Ms. Potato probably had a long day. Maybe it’s been a rough week and she’s under the weather. Perhaps she just needs some “me time” and then she’ll be feeling better. It could be that Couch is just not a people person, she’s more of an introvert. Does any of this sound familiar? We have created so many excuses to escape from reality. Then we go so far as to say, “I deserve it.”
Mr. Edmund Burke is credited for saying, “All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” It was John F. Kennedy that made this statement famous. I would argue that this is not specific to men, rather it includes all people. As I often do in this blog, lets ask the question, “is there an IF in God’s Word that addresses this issue.” Well friend there is a plethora of IFs regarding this issue that would likely warrant me writing a book (hint-hint). Lets take a look at one found in the book of James.
“22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in the mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it-not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it-they will be blessed in what they do.” (James 1:22-25 NIV)
Once we hear God’s word we face a choice. We can listen and allow it to come in one ear and out the other as we channel surf through life, like Ms. Couch Potato. This choice comes with no promise but rather a warning. We may not recall who we are , the substance of what we believe will be like a vapor or a glance in the mirror that quickly fades. On the other hand, we could be doers of God’s Word. IF we hear and act then we will be blessed. This means that our inaction or action in response to God’s Word will determine if we are blessed. I don’t know about you friend, but I welcome God’s blessing in my life. In fact I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone intentionally say “God could you please curse everything I do?” I have heard the equivalent in using His name in vain and asking Him to damn things. Crazy, if you ask me.
As you draw near to the Lord, you may begin to notice that complacency and inaction makes you uncomfortable. You may experience the conviction of the Holy Spirit. God has not shared His truth so that we can get fat on the Word and stay parked on the couch. I hope that this post will ignite a fire in your soul if your lights been dim. Go into the world and show the love of Christ in your actions. Let’s destroy the lie that God’s people don’t care. Let’s reflect the true nature of God and be servants first!
As always, I welcome comments and enjoy hearing what God is doing in your life!
