Depression does not discriminate. It effects anyone, anytime, anywhere. Sometimes it is related to events and other times it’s random and hits you out of nowhere. Why is this good news? It means that you are human like the rest of us. It means that you are not alone! The biggest lie we believe when we are stuck in depression is that “no one else feels like this“. This lie makes the burden heavier and the sadness deeper. Don’t believe the lie friend. You are never alone and never forsaken. (Hebrews 13:5) The intense feelings we have in seasons of depression are real but they are not factual. They do not reflect Truth.
It takes courage to ask for help, especially if you are used to hearing, “IF you just had stronger faith, THEN you wouldn’t be depressed.” This is another lie. Remember, Jesus wept! God incarnate had sorrow for you. What did Christ do in His anguish? He cried out to the Father. He prayed. He asked for comfort from his disciples. (they fell asleep on Him anyway but that’s not the point I’m making here) What should you and I do in times of depression? Cry out Abba, Father! Pray. Inhale. Cry. Exhale. Stay connected to others that will speak life over you. Seek godly counsel. Dive into God’s word. Remember, His mercies are new every morning. The darkness must flee because you belong to the Light. Never quit beloved, morning is coming!
“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16 NKLV)
“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.'” (Romans 8:15 NKJV)
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:21 NKJV)
