iPhone or iDol?

Yes, I went there. Here I sit at my laptop blogging with joy and I went there anyway. Why? Because there are few, if any, warning signs when purchasing a new gadget. I can guarantee that none of these warning signs caution you against losing your soul. I’m pretty sure I’ve never gone to the Apple store and read “Proceed with caution beloved as you enter into a world of faceless interactions based on your personal enjoyment and selfish fulfillment.”

Now I know my above statement on salvation has likely upset some folks as to whether my Christian doctrine is sound. After all, I can’t lose my salvation! Correct you can’t, but you can give it away. You can choose to worship at the alter of technology. You can be a lover of yourself instead of God. Just think of the term “selfie” for a moment. It’s tempting to pursue our pleasures, our interests, our family photos, and our favorite games with all of our time, talent and treasure. When does a harmless habit turn into an idol? I can’t answer that for you but I know Who can! First, ask yourself some questions, then ask the Father. Dive into His Word, and be refreshed.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I designed my schedule to accommodate my habit?
  • Have I used my talents to increase my habit?
  • How much of my money have I used to access this habit?
  • Has anyone I love been frustrated with my habit?

Ask God:

  • Father search me, reveal to me what you want me to know about my choices.
  • Father forgive me for any error in my thinking and show me how to apply Your Word in this area of my life.

Read the Bible:

“But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.” (James 1:14-15 NKJV)

“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” ( 1 John 1:8-9 NKJV)

“…in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God…” (2 Timothy 3: 1-2 NLT)
