Our world teaches us that abundance is found in success and achievement, yet so many wealthy people live in misery. Likewise, there are folks living on a tight budget that would be considered “poor” and some of them have peace and joy that is unshakable. How can this be? The answer lies in your free will. IF you chase after material possessions believing it will provide contentment, then you’re heart remains empty. You may have storage units that are filled with the riches of this world, but in the depths of your heart there is only despair. In the quiet times of your day, the darkness creeps up and you try to busy your mind to escape the pain. For each of us there is a longing that nothing in this world can fill.
This is actually good news! Why? If our abundance and peace was of this world, it wouldn’t be our choice. We wouldn’t have control over accessing joy even in times of sorrow. There would literally be no hope. If it was up to our spouse to provide us hope, how could we navigate the storms in marriage? If it was up to our boss to give us purpose, how could we manage a layoff? If it was up to our strength to climb the ladder of success, what do we do when we’re struck with a debilitating chronic illness?
The bible teaches us that our abundant life comes from Jesus. It’s not from us or from others. The longing that we experience is from God. Only Jesus can quench that thirst.
