When I was in high school, I was always a part of musical theatre performances, and I would audition every year with hundreds of other people for a part in one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Operas. I was blessed enough to be in four performances, however, I only had what some would consider a main role in one performance. Every year I sang my heart out at auditions, and clicked refresh on my email page every 10 seconds until they sent out the cast list, and my heart would sink when my name was listed under “soprano 2 chorus member”. Why? Because I didn’t feel like my part was important. I wasn’t front and center singing my very own song with a glamorous costume. I was back in the corner, singing a high harmony part in a group with twenty other girls my age.
Sadly, this is how some of us see the body of Christ. We think that if we’re not up on stage holding a microphone singing or preaching, we don’t mean anything, and we aren’t important. This is simply not true. You have a talent that is God given, use it! You don’t need to be on a stage with a mic to be a part of the body of Christ. You can still worship if you can’t sing. You can still lead without having to present a message.
Every single one of us has a God given gift or talent that we have been given to use for His glory. If you are good with kids, work in children’s ministries. If you are a singer, become a part of a praise team. If you enjoy helping others, mentor a younger believer. If you are technologically gifted, offer to run slides for your church, or create a website and upload sermons and church activities. If you don’t know what you are good at, ask someone; talk to your pastor, parents, friends, teachers, mentors, whoever you are comfortable with, they can help you identify your gifts and set you on the path towards using them to honor Christ!
Recently, I watched one of my performances and I quickly realized how weird it would sound without the soprano section. Without our section there would be no melody and no depth to the harmony. It is just the same with every believer in Christ, there is a place for you in the body, we need every part to do its job; do yours.
• 1 Corinthians 12:7-12 “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines”.
